What is FREC?
FREC - First Response Emergency Care - is a pre-hospital care qualification for people who are likely to be first on scene at a serious incident and may have to manage a casualty for an extended period before an ambulance arrives.
It sits a level above workplace first aid. Where a First Aid at Work course prepares someone to give immediate help until the emergency services take over, FREC Level 3 trains a responder to assess, treat and monitor casualties using recognised pre-hospital protocols, equipment and airway adjuncts, then hand over cleanly to the ambulance service.
The qualification is regulated on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and the certificate is valid for three years. We deliver FREC as in-house training at your premises with a maximum of six learners per course, so every delegate gets significant hands-on scenario time.

Course Content
What FREC Level 3 Covers
Taught and assessed through realistic scenarios rather than classroom theory alone.
- The role, responsibilities and legal position of the first responder
- Scene safety, dynamic risk assessment and incident management
- Systematic patient assessment: primary and secondary surveys
- Airway management, including the use of airway adjuncts and suction
- Administration of oxygen and assisted ventilation
- Basic life support, CPR and use of an AED
- Catastrophic bleeding, tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
- Trauma management: chest, head, spinal and limb injuries
- Medical emergencies, including cardiac, respiratory and diabetic
- Recognition and treatment of shock and anaphylaxis
- Triage and managing multiple casualties
- Clinical record keeping and structured handover to the ambulance service

First Aid at Work or FREC?
Most workplaces are well served by FAW. FREC is for responders whose role is to manage casualties, not just hold the line until the ambulance arrives.
