IQ Student Services’ number one strategic objective is to ‘curate a fantastic student experience’. However, management has identified a growing trend of stress amongst students, which often manifests when they are at their places of residents. There are some cases where this stress has led to reported instances of suicide, deeply affecting both the student community and staff.
IQ Student Services made tackling this a priority. The complexity of the organisation means that they needed to provide support, signposting and access to services throughout their sites and around the clock.
Intervention was identified as a key objective and IQ Student Services’ management team looked for a solution that would help students and staff in identifying and dealing with aspects of mental stress.
Green Cross Training specialise in large scale training projects. Our internal training team immediately began identifying a programme that would provide the required level of training across key sites.
Our training team worked with three lead trainers to create a programme. The team consisted of highly experienced TRIM (Trauma Risk Incident Management) trainers, as well as ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) trainers.
We created a two-stage programme which covered the provision of Mental Health First Aiders as well as a programme of awareness courses to promote recognition of the signs of mental stress.
The Mental Health First Aid course has been targeted at key staff within certain locations and the Mental Health Awareness training was rolled out to maintenance staff.
Our carefully tailored programme of training was rolled out in 7 key locations and was delivered by three principle trainers. The programme also reflected the varying backgrounds of staff in order to ensure that the training was accessible.
A total of 12 Mental Health First Aid courses were delivered alongside 8 Mental Health Awareness courses.
A suite of reporting mechanisms were produced, including records which registered intervention, as well as the continuous evaluation of Mental Health First Aiders which feedback both before and after training.
Green Cross Training’s provision was a fully managed service including the coordination of venues, travel and liaising with key stakeholders at IQ Student Services.
